Description
Tomato yellow ring virus can cause serious damage to tomato, potato and ornamental crops. The virus is easily transmitted by mechanical means, which can cause the virus to spread unknowingly within a crop and between crops, especially in the absence of visible disease symptoms. In addition, the threat of TYRV spread increases when vectors such as the thrips Frankiniella occidentalis and Thrips tabaci appear. The virus has so far been found in Poland, on tomato, in one growing season, which may indicate that it was brought to Poland with seedlings. The absence of further outbreaks of the virus in subsequent growing seasons may indicate that it is not currently present in Poland.
TYRV has a wide range of host plants, but has so far been found most often on tomato, in mixed infection with Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV).
