Global maps of area suitability for solar photovoltaics on rooftops and cropland

  • 1. German Aerospace Center (DLR e.V.), Institute of Networked Energy Systems, Cureistr. 4, 70563 Stuttgart, Germany

Description

This dataset consists of the following global maps:

1. The area suitability of agri-photovoltaics or agrivoltaics based on agricultural land cover in 5 km x 5 km resolution for three scenarios (optimistic, neutral and conservative) of acceptance

2. The built-up fraction of urban land cover available for rooftop solar installations in 10km x 10km resolution

3. The area suitability of rooftop-photovoltaics in a 10km x 10km resolution

The maps are based on the land cover data from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service from 2019 and the Open Street Map accessed in 2021.

Notes

The ideas and methods employed to create this data are explained in a paper submitted to the journal Environmental Research Letters form IOPScience. (Environmental Research Letters - IOPscience). The reference will be added on publication.
