The Kerykeion mint control linked coinage of Andragoras and Sophytes
Authors/Creators
Description
This paper details the significance of two previously unknown coin types bearing the kerykeion mint control in the coinage of Andragoras, the satrap of Parthia. The identification of these new varieties of the Athena/owl (Series 2.18) and Tyche/Athena (Series 6.6) strengthens the coherency of the interpretation of the control linked sequence of larger denomination emissions belonging to the period of Andragoras, who it appears was briefly succeeded by Sophytes in the closing stage of the Parni conquest of Parthia led by Arsaces I. These coins, and their control linked counterparts, serve to define an event on which the sparse historical record is silent; the transfer of authority from Andragoras to Sophytes in a brief interlude before the complete conquest of Parthia by Arsaces.
