Description

This dataset contains concentration data for total nitrogen (totN), total phosphorus (totP), and total organic carbon (TOC) in combination with modeled discharge data. These refer to a selection of coastal Swedish catchments and sub-catchments surrounding lake Mälaren (central Sweden).

The dataset used as source material data from a larger public data repository from national and regional Swedish environmental monitoring ( https://miljodata.slu.se/mvm ) and the Swedish meteorological and hydrological institute ( https://www.smhi.se/data/hydrologi/vattenwebb ).

Data presented in this dataset refer to a selection of not overlapping catchments that vary greatly in size and are representative of different regions of the Swedish country. Here concentration measures and discharge data are coupled based on both time and space.

Combined time-series of discharges and concentrations across the time window 1990-2018 (where available from the above-cited data repository) are collected in txt files identified by the catchment ID and the concentration pollutant (totN/totP/TOC).

In addition to the time series the file “Catchements_summary_data.xlsx” contain extra information about each catchment:

  • Maps of all the catchments and identification numbers
  • ID identification code of different catchments in the study. The code is composed of two letters standing for a) C/S Coastal/Sub-catchments b) L/S Large/Small and a numerical code base on the ID of the concentration measurement station reported in the figures in the Catchments reference sheet
  • Latitude and longitude of Concentration measuring stations near catchment closure points. Coordinates are given in decimal degrees and based on the projection SWEREF99 TM
  • Average concentration from measured data over the time period given in ug/l for totN and totP and mg/l for TOC
  • Estimated legacy concentration data are given in ug/l for totN and totP and mg/l for TOC
  • Estimated Active concentration data are given in ug/l for totN and totP and mg/l for TOC
  • Average discharge data are given in m3/s
  • Average catchments area is given in km2
  • Agricultural land share as a percentage of the total area (data source: https://vattenwebb.smhi.se/modelregion/)
  • Forest land share as a percentage of the total area (data source: https://vattenwebb.smhi.se/modelregion/)

Funding: the dataset is part of a project funded by the Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University, RA7 project SUB-ECOCLIM. Open-access funding is provided by Stockholm University.
