SYNTHESIS AND MICROBIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF SOME NOVEL CHALCONE DERIVATIVES

Description

Chalcones are among the most extensively investigated class of organic compounds. Chalcones has been considered as magic moiety, which is a core structure in various synthetic pharmaceuticals displaying a broad-spectrum of biological activities.

They are widely used as anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-HIV, etc

In view  Of the wide spectrum activities of  condensed Chalcones, it  was thought  worthwhile  to  undertake  the synthesis  of (1,3 diphenyl-2- propen-1-one) chalcones nucleus  is  linked to another  biologically  active moiety.3-methyl-4hydroxy acetophenone and respective aromatic aldehyde where mixed and dissolved in minimum amount of alcohol. To this aqous potassium hydroxide Solution added slowly and mixed occasionally for 24Hrs  at room temperature Completion of reaction is identified by TLC using silica gel-G.

The purity of compounds synthesised was established by TLC the synthesised derivatives by were characterised by FT-IR, 1HNMR and mass spectral analyses. All the derivatives synthesised were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities using cup plate method against gram positive bacillus subtilis and staphylococcus and gram negative is Escherichia coli and prototeus vulgaris at 100mg/ml.Benzyle penicillin was used as reference standard for comparing results.

The compound belongs to (A1 to A6) have shown promising antibacterial and fungal activity compounds A4,A5,A6 were found to be potent activity and A1,A2,A3 Shows moderate activity.

Keywords: 3-Methyl-4-hydroxy acetophenone Chalones, Antimicrobial, Antifungal.
