Description
Abstract
Hypertension is the leading contributing factor to all-cause global mortality. It is the main risk factor for stroke and The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidative effects of flavonoids isolated from Typha domingensis pers. fruit. Flavonoids from Typha domingensis per fruit were isolated, preliminary phytochemical tests were done and the appropriate dose for rats was determined. Rats were divided into three groups: group I (control group) treated with the normal saline (1ml/kg body weight (b.w)), group II treated with CCl4 (1ml/kg b.w) only, and group III treated with both a flavonoid isolated (1000mg/kg b.w), and CCl4 (1ml/kg b.w). The biochemical markers: malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and kidney function (urea, creatinine, and uric acid) were determined. The results showed that CCl4 significantly elevated the levels of MDA, urea, creatinine, and uric acid in the serum as compared with the control group, while lower SOD and GSH were observed in the CCl4-treated group compared with the control group. The result also showed that flavonoids isolated reduced the increase in MDA, kidney index urea, creatinine, and uric acid levels caused by CCl4. Flavonoids isolated increased SOD and GSH levels compared with the group treated with CCl4 only. The experiment indicates that flavonoids isolated have good antioxidative and nephroprotective effects.
