Martwe drewno jako element ekosystemu rzecznego
Description
Fallen trees and their remains, i.e. woody debris, are an important element of the majority of the world’s river ecosystems. They are particularly significant for the functioning of river ecosystems in forest biomes, as they influence the formation of river channel morphological structures and natural habitats, initiate and maintain microhabitats for water organisms, and affect material and energy transfer along the river continuum. However, woody debris is also a problem in river management. Individual fallen tress do not block streamflow significantly, yet accumulation of debris can form woody jams, mainly on poorly designed hydrotechnical objects, which leads to flash flooding and destruction of riverside infrastructure. Such problems can be mitigated by technical measures (debris racks, stabilising logs on banks and in the river channel). Despite the issues, modern management of river ecosystems should take into account the management of woody debris and ensure its adequate amount in a river. Adding
deadwood to rivers and maintaining its natural resources is applied in the majority of river restoration projects.
