Description
Energy security is one of the critical factors in the functioning and sustainable development of any state. Countries with a dominant import of energy resources are susceptible to the quality of the energy security policy. Since the countries of the European Union mainly belong to energy importers, the critical factor in ensuring energy sustainability is the political context of relations with suppliers and transistors of energy resources. Since 2014, collective Europe has made significant efforts to contain Russia's hybrid aggression. Since 2022, after the transition of the war into an active phase of hostilities, these efforts have been intensified. In response to European sanctions, the "oil-pumping country" initiated a speculative increase in energy prices, which ultimately became another tool of putin's geopolitical ambitions.
The energy security of the EU is one of the most important directions of the policy of a united Europe. However, the long-term ignoring by pro-European politicians of threats related to dependence on imported energy resources and their use by russia as a geopolitical lever revealed the shortcomings of the European strategy. The strategic goal of the EU in this direction at the current stage has become the achievement of energy independence of the region and ensuring the energy security of all participants. The article is devoted to analyzing the impact of the russian invasion of Ukraine on the energy security of the EU. The paper analyzes the main measures to reform the EU's energy policy in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the prospects for restoring energy security and sovereignty of European countries. The use of the system and structural-functional analysis made it possible not only to draw conclusions about the current state of the EU energy security problem but also to summarize critical problems and ways to overcome them in the short and long term.
Russia's aggression in Ukraine contributed to the strengthening of political will, which is necessary for member states to implement measures to strengthen energy independence and security in the energy infrastructure. A renewed collective Europe strategy will include promoting renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures to help drastically reduce fossil fuel imports and encourage cleaner alternatives. It is now even more clear that for the EU and its member states, action to combat climate change and energy security is two sides of the same coin, and concerted action on one will strengthen the other in the long run. Therefore, a future direction of further research is the study of the relationship between the environmental and energy policies of the European Union.
