Description

This white paper is a draft prepared by the NIDDK Information Network (dknet.org) describing our work in evaluating data repositories that do or can host primary data produced by researchers funded by NIDDK.  We developed formal instruments to assess repositories against principles developed for open science, FAIR, data citation and trustworthiness, as described in a previous publication (Murphy et al., 2021, PLoS One, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0253538, along with an additional instrument for tagging repositories for characteristics of relevance to researchers looking to choose a repository to host their data, e.g., size limits, costs, issuance of DOIs.  As a starting point, we evaluated the list of repositories on the dkNET website.  In addition to the repository evaluation, we performed a preliminary analysis of the types of standards that are currently in use in NIDDK relevant areas.  We first compiled a list of standards implemented by dkNET listed repositories by examining  FairSharing.org, which collects information on standards.  We also took the list of standards from the dkNET Resource Catalog and performed natural language processing to identify mentions in the general open access literature and endocrine/metabolic specific journals.  We present here our preliminary results.  Please note that this white paper represents a draft and the results are subject to change as we continue to perform quality and consistency checks.
