Description

ABSTRACT

Floristic characterization of La Tortuga Island was made using a standard collection and herborization methodology. A total of 67 species of Angiosperms were determined and grouped into 58 genera and 35 families, of which, 16 species represent new records for the flora of this island, while 6 are included in the Red List of the Venezuelan Flora. The families with the highest number of species were Boraginaceae and Malvaceae (6 spp. each), Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae (5 spp. each) and Cactaceae (4 spp.). Four plant formations were identified: Halophilous Grasslands, Mangroves, Psamophilous Grasslands and Xerophilous Shrubs, as well as a transition zone (ecotone) between the latter two. The Xerophilous Shrubs occupied a greater area and richness (52 species) than the other plant formations. The Flora of the La Tortuga island is analogue to that of other Venezuelan, Caribbean and tropical coastal and insular areas of the world, where species with morphological and/or physiological characteristics that allow them to adapt to saline soils, arid climate and tides action are common.
