ASPECTUL SOCIO-LINGVISTIC AL CONCEPTULUI "ONOARE" ÎN LIMBILE ENGLEZĂ ȘI ROMÂNĂ
Description
“Honour” as a human value stands at the core of the human self. It becomes important
for a person only in social interaction with the others. If there is no social communication there is no need for social feelings that help the human self identify its value among the others.
“Honour” is not an emotion, it is an appreciation of somebody by an authority, or a person who is honourable, still the feeling of honour may be connected to experiencing different emotions. Various studies on emotion concepts emphasize their cultural and social dependence. On the one hand emotions as feelings characteristic to humans may appear as personal manifestations but on the other hand the individual habituates in a society and his/her mental models associated with a certain emotion concept is dictated by the societal norms and cultural behavior manifested both linguistically and non-linguistically.
The necessity to study the specific ways to express concepts in various types of societies, cultures and languages appeared together with globalization and the phenomenon of inter-cultural communication. As stated above the language promotes the cultural important values, many of them including such social emotions as “shame”, “guilt” or “honour”. The given study concentrates on clarifying the issue of “honour” and its association with various mental models in English and Romanian.
