Description

The Greek Inscriptions of the Roman Empire (GIRE) dataset is based on the GIST dataset (https://zenodo.org/record/6827729) created by Social Dynamics in the Ancient Mediterranean project in 2022. The dataset consists of a subset of inscriptions which (a) are geocoded, (b) are located within the borders of the Roman Empire in its highest extent in 117 CE, (c) include numerical temporal information (typically a dating interval), (d) their dating interval intersects the period from 50 BCE to 350 CE.

In version 0.2, the dataset consists of 52,542 records distributed across 29 attributes (+ GIRE_ID attribute). The attributes include references to other epigraphic databases, such as Trismegistos, EDCS, EDH etc. The scripts used to generate the dataset and its metadata are available via GitHub repository  https://github.com/sdam-au/GI_ETL

The dataset is available as Geojson and Parquet file, both containing geocoded spatial data, but differing significantly in size.
