QUAND LA LENTEUR DE L'ACTION HUMAINE TUE LA PLANÈTE. RÉFLEXIONS SUR LE DISCOURS ÉCOLOGIQUE À VISÉE ESCHATOLOGIQUE

This study aims at providing a discourse-oriented analysis of the media coverage of the Lubrizol chemical fire that took place in Rouen in September 2019. Being commonly referred to as an ecological disaster in the media, this event has been intensely debated in catastrophic discourse tones which emphasize the urge to take immediate action and implicitly point to the authorities’ irresponsible lack of action. This paper sets out to look into the discourse means used to spotlight the poor dynamism of the authorities dealing with this ecological disaster. The analysis, which is carried out on extracts excerpted from the French regional newspaper Ouest-France, reveals that the discourse media dealing with this event takes the form of an illocutionary macro-act of accusation triggering people´s feeling of insecurity and revolt and providing an eschatological perception on the ecological disaster.
