PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF THE ROOT, BARK, AND LEAVES OF FLAMBOYANT TREE IN NIGERIA

  • 1. Department of General Studies, Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria

Description

Phytochemical screening of the roots, bark, and leaves of the flamboyant tree in Nigeria was performed using standard procedures in water, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts. Tannins, saponins, carbohydrates, glycosides, resins, phlobatannins, alkaloids, and flavonoids were found in the samples using a simple quantitative method. Phytochemical screenings revealed compounds found in plants that had previously been extensively researched as a source of medicinal agent; thus, it is expected that phytochemicals will be used for the treatment of bacterial infections. Since time immemorial, man has used various parts of plants in the treatment and prevention of various ailments.
