Many applicable models are analyzed to design a geogrid as a soil reinforcement system located under shallow circular foundations. For this purpose, a set of calculations were carried out to assess the foundation settlement with the consideration of different variables, including foundation diameter, surcharge magnitude, the number of geogrid layers, sand layer thickness, and geogrid installation arrays considering both constant and variable widths for geogrids in soil depth. Totally, 162 models were analyzed via the PLAXIS 2D program by assuming the Mohr-Coulomb model for soil, as well as the linearly elastic behavior for both geogrids and the foundation. Based on the trend of variations in the analyzed data, the influence of parameters such as foundation diameter, surcharge magnitude, and the number of geogrid layers on the settlement variation is evaluated. The key conclusions are provided as follows:

  1. The use of geogrid significantly reduced the settlement of the points below the circular foundation.
  2. The highest efficiency of geogrids in the reduction of the settlements happened when the vertical spacing of geogrids, that is, the thickness of the sand layer was equal to 45 cm.
  3. The settlement ratio parameter is found to be independent of the footing diameter.
  4. A higher surcharge magnitude exhibits a bigger settlement ratio.
  5. As the number of layers increases, the settlement ratio decreases.
  6. The installation of geogrids possessing variable width with depth yielded a decrease in the settlement rather than geogrids with constant width were utilized.
