Description

What is REM sleep?

REM sleep is one of the five stages of sleep that humans experience. It is known as the “rapid eye movement” stage because during REM sleep, your eyes move rapidly from side to side. This stage usually occurs about 90 minutes after you fall asleep.

Most people have four or five REM episodes per night. Each episode can last from 5 to 30 minutes. The last episode of the night is usually the longest.

REM sleep is important for memory consolidation and learning. It’s also thought to be important for emotional health and wellbeing.

What are the stages of sleep?

Every night, we experience different stages of sleep. These stages are necessary for our bodies to rest and recharge. Below are the different stages of the sleep cycle and what happens during each stage.

Stage 1 non-REM sleep

Sleep occurs in repeating cycles during which brain waves change from high-frequency beta waves to slower alpha waves and eventually to theta waves and delta waves. In stage 1 non-REM sleep, the brain produces mainly alpha waves. This is a light sleep stage in which people can be easily awakened.

Stage 2 non-REM sleep

Non-REM sleep Stage 2 is the transitional stage between light sleep and deep sleep. In Stage 2, your body begins to relax and your brain waves slow down. This is when you begin to lose awareness of your surroundings and may start to doze off. If you’re awakened during Stage 2, you may feel like you were just dozing off.

Stage 3 non-REM sleep

Non-REM sleep is divided into four stages, and is the most common type of sleep. Stage 3 is considered deep sleep, and is characterized by a lack of muscle movement and a decreased heart rate. This stage is important for physically repairing the body’s tissues and muscles.

What happens during REM sleep?

REM sleep is one of the four stages of sleep. REM sleep is classified as a deep sleep, and it is the stage in which dreams occur. The body enters REM sleep about 90 minutes after falling asleep. The heart rate and breathing rate increase, and the eyes move rapidly back and forth.

During REM sleep, the body’s muscles are paralyzed, except for the muscles that control eye movement and breathing. The muscles used for breathing are also paralyzed during REM sleep.

Researchers believe that the brain uses this paralysis to control the body’s movements. During REM sleep, a person may dream, or have a nightmare.

Notes

Sleep deprivation has been shown to have negative consequences on both your mental and physical health. But what are the benefits of getting a good night's sleep? Getting a good night's sleep can improve your cognitive function, memory, reaction time, and even your mood. Researchers say that these benefits are likely due to the fact that REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is key for consolidating memories and learning new information. Continue reading this article to learn about REM sleep and the benefits of it.
