Ovenbird Mist-netting Dataset

  • 1. USGS
  • 2. University of Otago

Description

Data from a multi-year mist-netting study of ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapilla) at a site in Maryland, USA.

The text files 'ovenCHpcapt.txt' and 'ovenCHptrap.txt' contain the ovenbird mist net data of Dawson & Efford (2009) re-analysed by Efford & Schofield (2022). The data are also included in the R package 'secr' (Efford 2022) where a more complete description may be found.

The format follows that used by 'secr', described in secr-datainput.pdf.

# Use this R code to re-construct the 'secr' capthist object

library(secr)
ovenCHp <- read.capthist('ovenCHpcapt.txt', 'ovenCHptrap.txt',
    detector = 'proximity')

# ... and summarise with
summary(ovenCHp, terse = TRUE)

           2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
Occasions     9   10   10   10   10
Detections   41   49   57   33   35
Animals      20   22   26   19   16
Detectors    44   44   44   44   44

'Occasions' correspond to days. Detections were binary at the level of bird x net x day. Birds could be recorded in more than one net per day.
