Description

Four mitrids have been found in the Cape Verde lslands; one species (Mitra (Sohlia) carbonacea) is recorded for the first time. All these species have wide areas of distribution along the West African coast, and one of them (Mitra nigra) lives as far as the North of the Iberian Peninsula. The protoconchs and radulae of Mitra nigra, Cancilla turtoni and Neocancilla hebes are described and illustrated, and the pattern of pigmentation of these species is described. The generic position of C. turtoni and N. hebes is discussed, and lectotypes of both species are chosen. From the study of types, it is concluded that Mitra exilima Locard, 1897, M. minor Locard, 1897, and M. cabrerai Talavera, 1975, must be considered synonyms of C. turtoni, and M. asperulata A. Adams, 1853, synonym of N. hebes.
