O Conceito de Vida em Questão
Authors/Creators
Description
QUESTIONING THE CONCEPT OF LIFE
Abstract: During the last four centuries, a change in the way of considering life and man has taken place: they have become objects of science. The concept of life, in the biological sense, fuses with the idea of human, social, and moral life. Three aspects of this question will be discussed in this paper: a) previous considerations related to philosophies of life which are opposed to the intellectualistic and scientistic ones, such as Nietzsche's; b) the history of biology, grounded on the idea of life based in the concept of inheritance, such as François Jacob's; c) the history of knowledge about man and power over his life, from the analysis of the link between biological sciences and other knowledge and practices fields (medical, educational, military, industrial, etc.), such as Michel Foucault’s.
Keywords: Life; Biology; Knowledge/Power; Philosophy and History of Sciences.
