Precipitation treatments had five levels: in 2018, 1. 50% addition (+50%); 2. 25% addition (+25%); 3. ambient precipitation (CK); 4. 25% reduction (-25%); 5. 50% reduction (-50%) in 2018. In 2019, the precipitation treatments were reversed: 1. 50% reduction (-50%); 2. 25% reduction (-25%); 3. ambient precipitation (CK); 4. 25% addition (+25%); 50% addition (+50%). Nitrogen treatments had two levels: 1. N elevated by 10 g m-2 yr-1; 2. ambient N (no N addition). Soil depths had two levels: 1. 0–10 cm soil layer; 2. 10–20 cm soil layers.
