Description
Periodate oxidation of 2-hydroxy-5,6-dimetkoxyindan-1-one, obtained from 2-diazo-5,6-dimethirxyindan-1-one, furnishes an excellent yield of 2-on carboxy-4,5-dimetboxyphonylacetaldehyde, which has been cyclised most satisfactorily with orthophosophoric acid to 6,7-dimethoxyisocoumarin.
