4-Hydroxycoumarin has been condensed with malic acid to yield benzopyranyl (3, 2-c) pyres-2,8-dione which has been brominated to 9-bromo derivative and the latter degraded In 4H-furo(3, 2-c)benzopyran-4-one. 4-Hydroxycoumarin, 4-hydroxy-6-methylcoumarin and 4-hydroxy-7-rnethoxycoumarin have been condensed with ethyl acetoacetate and degraded to corresponding 3-methyl-4H-furo(3,2-e) benzopyran.4-ones
