Studies in the Synthesis of Quinoline Derivatives : Part I : Synthesis of Bromoquinolines

Bromination of acetoacetanilide gave \(\omega\)-bromo-acetoacetanilide, the structure of which was proved by NMR spectra and also by its cyclisation to 4-bromomethyl-carbostyril which was different from 4-methyl-3-bromo-carbostyril. Several substituted acetoacetarylamides were brominated to \(\omega\)-bromo derivative which underwent cyclisation to 4-bromomethylcarbostyril derivatives. 3-Bromo-4-methyl-carbostyril derivatives and 3-bromo-4-bromomethylcarbostyril were also prepared.
