This dissertation and study focused on one of the long-standing debates in the academia and business as to what drives firm performance. Following development of resource- based view the focus of strategic management has been shifting out of prescriptions formerly provided by industrial organizations frameworks towards building sustainable set of firm resources to underpin sustainable competitive advantage.

This study analyzed the sources of variability in performance of major UK firms, as represented by FTSE 100 index, to determine existence and relative contributions among other of industry and firm specific factors.
