Ninhydrin (I) reacts with N-methyl-, N-ethyl- and N-benzyl- aniline to yield, 1,3-indandione derivatives of type II. These products are stable and yield well-crystallised acetyl derivatives. A similar reaction takes place between I and 1,3-diphenylguanidine to yield III. The reaction of I with diphenylarnine proceeds differently to give a compound of the structure IV.
