Action of Grignard Reagents on Benzils

Benzils added one molecule of Grignard reagents to give the corresponding aroyldiaryl. carbinols (1-10). However, with excess of Grignard reagents, they gave pinacols (11-27). The structure of the carbinols (1-10) was established by i.r. and u.v. spectroscopy and by oxidation.
