Description

Heart rate, acceleration, and respirometry data from four wild-caught gulls during climate chamber and treadmill calibration measurements (2018), as well as heart rate and acceleration data from five free-ranging gulls from a colony on Texel, NL during the breeding season (May - July, 2019).

Notes

All procedures performed have been approved by the Centrale Commissie Dierproeven (20174225) and by the ethical committees of the NIOZ and the NIOO.  Acknowledgments: We thank David Tijssen for conducting surgical implantations of heart rate loggers. Götz Eichhorn provided advice on respirometry and heart rate implants. Frank Majoor caught the gulls for 2018 trials in captivity. Gerrit Hardeman (UvA) wrote the software used to remotely download heart rate data in the field, and Edwin Baaij helped to set up the communication system in the field. Tom Delahanty (TSE systems) provided advise and modifications to the heart rate implants. Quinten Madari provided advise on processing the ECG signal. Daniel Zúñiga (Max Planck Institute for Ornithology) provided advise on surgical implant protocols in birds. We thank Jonathan Green and two anonymous reviewers for their detailed and constructive feedback on an earlier version of this manuscript. JMB was supported by NSERC (PGSD3-503551-2017) and the Ecology Fund of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAWWF/807/19004). UvA-BiTS studies are facilitated by infrastructures for e-Ecology, developed with support of NLeSC and LifeWatch and carried out on the Dutch national e-infrastructure with the support of SURF Cooperative.
