Description

This paper will consider the understanding and the use of the term "paradigm" in library and information science. Etymologically, this term originates from the Greek language (παραδειγμα), but it was introduced and promoted in the center of modern philosophy of science by the American physicist Thomas S. Kuhn. The citation analysis of professional papers referred to in the Web of Science database points to the conclusion that the meaning of the concept of paradigm has over time separated from the original scientific meaning and got transferred to everyday speech in a distorted and incomplete interpretation. The use of superficial interpretation of the concept of paradigm in written scientific papers only as a model or template for understanding a world that can coexist with another, and its changes as ordinary evolutionary alternations creates serious consequences in the theoretical sense. This is especially important for sciences whose traditional values, methods, and theories have been shaken under the impact of technological development. Since librarianship is both an interdisciplinary science and a professional activity, theoretical formulations and concepts are projected on the essential aspects of understanding the profession, the gradation of professional values, and professional ethics.
