The paper attempts an assessment of geographic research and teaching in India on the basis of the review of existing literature. It begins with an overview of  the state of geographic research and teaching iin the world as a whole with a focus on English speaking world followed by a detailed  study of the Indian scenario. The noted a huge  disconnect between the ground realities and the research and teaching of geography in India. There is not only a crisis of identity but also a lack of contemporary relevance in our researches and teaching courses. Finally, the paper recommends some remedial measures to overcome the problem and strengthen the roots of our discipline.
