\(\beta\)-Ketoanilides may be considered as substituted ,\(\beta\)-diketones as the same group is involved in the chelation. Four such reagents, acetoacetanoilide, benzoylacetanilide, benzoyl-m-nitroacetanilide and cyclopentanone-2-carboxyanilide have been used in the gravimetric and extraction-spectrophotometric determination of various metal ions and their separation from foreign Ions. The relative merit as a gravimetric and as a spectrophotometric reagent depends on the nature of substitution. The effect of substitution on the nature of chelates of several derivatives of acetoacetanilide have been studied. Indirect titrimetric methods for beryllium involving the bromination of the anilide group have also been developed. The use of a thio-derivative, acetothioacetanilide has been reported.
