Manuscript received 28 October 1977. accepted 14 March 1978

A new series of complex compounds between 6-substituted 2-thiouracils (substituent= H, CH3, C3H7 and NH2) and CU(Il) was prepared. lR spectroscopy was used to study the bonding characteristics of these compounds. All the 2-thiouracils were shown to act as chelates via the Sat C(2) and the N(3) atoms. In a parallel study, 5-substituted uracils (substituent= 1, NO2) were also shown to act as chelates, but via the O at C(2) and the N(1) atoms.
