The Laidler and Landskroener method for evaluating b*, the distance of closest approach of solvent molecules to the activated complex in a bimolecular reaction is applicable only when the transition state is highly polarized. A more general method for calculating b* in case of above mentioned reactions, irrespective of the polarity of the transition state and free from any assumptions about the model of the activated complex, has been suggested. The method has been applied in alkaline hydrolysis of ethylacetate In water enriched DMSO between 30 and 35°. The b* was found to be 2.41 A° which is in agreement with the value obtained from the data of D. D. Roberts.
