Description
Carpophilus brachypterus (Say)
Nitidula brachyptera Say 1825: 183.
The original Say type specimen of this species is lost or destroyed. Carpophilus brachypterus is a member of the speciose subgenus Ecnomorphus, and a neotype designation is necessary to provide taxonomic stability to the name and prevent potential taxonomic and systematic problems in the future. A male specimen collected at a similar time and matching the original type locality of “eastern United States ” was chosen from general holdings at the MCZ and is deposited there. Labels for the designated specimen are as follows: “Penn” “ ♂ ” “MCZ ENT/00596662”. Red label added reads as follows: “ Neotype / Nitidula brachyptera / Say, 1825 /Designated by Powell & Cline 2016”.
