Substituted benzylidineacenaphthenones were photolysed in benzene in presence of air. Cyclodehydropenation led to substitnted-benzochrysenes as well as photo-oxidative cleavage of benzylidine double bond leading to Dapbthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid anhydride as the major product. Photolysis of acenaphthenone also gave naphthalene1,8-dicarboxylic acid anhydride under the same condition in which the benzylidine analogues were irradiated.
