Ergativity in Pashto
Authors/Creators
Description
This study focuses on the ergatitivity in Pashto. The Minimalist programme of Chomsky is adopted as a framework for analysis. The main area explored in this chapter is the derivation of Pashto's ergative structures. The results show that in Pashto ergativity is assigned in both past tense and perfect aspect. Morevover, volitionality also plays a significant role in determining the ergative of subject in Pashto. Ergative case was found assigned to subject in past tense and perfect aspect if and only if the action denoted was volitional.
