Abstract: Our understanding of the flaring events on the Sun is only one and a half-century old. The discovery of the solar flare in recorded history was sudden and unexpected. The same event also shows us how we can be affected on Earth by an event that occurs on the Sun. Our home planet is protected by its magnetic field and atmosphere. But if a solar flare is large enough, it can cause substantial damage. In this article, I discuss the possibility of the gigantic flaring events on the Sun and its effects on the Earth in light of recent discoveries.
