ABSTRACT

Introduction. Essential oils have been widely studied in recent years thanks to their various applications, among which are the pesticide action and its use as a natural biopesticide, this is a good alternative to replace chemical products, since thanks to its monoterpene constituents and Sesquiterpenes have shown fast-acting toxins against insects, which can include deterrence and repellency, achieving positive results for pest control. Objective. To evaluate the allelopathic effect and the pesticidal activity produced by the essential oil of star anise (Illicium verum Hook. F). Methodology. Essential oil was extracted using 427.51 g of star anise nuts. For the qualitative allelopathy test, in vitro germination of lettuce seeds was carried out, having a control group and a test group for seven days. In addition, a quantitative test was carried out to evaluate the pesticidal activity of the essential oil using humid chambers where 12 aphids and a fresh leaf were placed for each bottle with concentrations of the essential oil of 0, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8% v/v. For the measurement of the response variable, the Image J program version 1.8.0 was used and the statistical analysis was done in the statistical software InfoStat version 2017.1.2. performing a completely randomized design (DCA) with four treatments (T1, T2, T3, T4), two controls (CE and CAE) and four replications for each treatment. Results and Discussion. Four mL of essential oil were obtained with a yield of 0.936%. In the phytochemical analysis the following metabolites were found: α-terpinene, eugenol, linalol, 1,8-cineole, p-anisaldehyde, limonene and anethole. According to the results obtained, in the qualitative test the allelopathic effect is observed by inhibiting the germination of lettuce seeds compared to the control group. From the quantitative test it is observed that the essential oil of star anise has a good pesticidal activity, since a lower% of damage was observed when treating the leaves with low concentrations of essential oil (0.2%), in addition there were differences between the samples and the controls, indicating that the results were specifically for the essential oil and not for external factors such as oxidative damage on the leaf due to the study time and the essential oil components.
