Oxime derivative (1a) of friedelin (1) on oxidation with hydrogen peroxide and selenium dioxide in tertiary butanol furnishes an ɛ-lactone, friedelolactone (2) and 2,3-seco-friedelonic acid (3). The structures of these compounds have been fully established on the basis of spectral data (IR, MS, PMR, and 13C NMR). Antimicrobial activity of the compounds were also investigated and the results are reported herein.
