A novel method for the spectrophotometric determination of acetazolamide and piracetam in pharmaceutical formulations using molybdenum blue complex formation was developed by the authors. Aqueous and acidic solutions of the drug sample of acetazolamide on reaction with ammonium molybdate solution and hydrazine sulphate solution gave a clear, stable and intense blue colored molybdenum blue complex. This molybdenum blue showed a λmax at 830 nm for the aqueous solution of the drug sample and at 824.5 nm for the acidic solution of the drug sample. Beer’s law was found to be obeyed in the range 0–80 µg/ml for the former and 0–40 µg/ml for the latter. Aqueous solution of the drug sample of piracetam on reaction with 2.5% ammonium molybdate solution and 0.15% hydrazine sulphate solution followed by heating, an intense blue colored product was developed, which showed a λmax at 830 nm. Beer’s law was
found to be obeyed in the range of 0–60 µg/ml. The method was found to be accurate, precise and simple. The method is important in view of the fact that the excess dosage causes clinical problems and optimum dosage has to be fixed in the use of the drug.
