Modern theory and notation of Byzantine chanting tradition : a Near-Eastern musicological perspective

Authors/Creators

Description

Markos Skoulios' article relates of a peculiar understanding of modality, in general, of the Byzantine material. To our knowledge, there is no comprehensive work available in any Western language, about the influences of the theory of Chrysanthos of Madytos and its subsequent “developments” by the Patriarchal Commission of 1881 in Constantinople. This paper is therefore most welcome since it fills the gap of one of the most complex aspects of Oriental modality.
