Sustainability of University Lecturers' Performance for Actualization of Knowledge-Based Economy in Cross River State, Nigeria

The purpose of the study was to find out the influence of sustainability of university Lecturers' performance on the actualization of a knowledge-based economy in Cross River State, Nigeria. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The ex-post-facto design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 28,968 lecturers from the two public universities in Cross River State. Sampling was done in multiple stages using stratified, proportionate and simple random techniques and Yamane (1967) formula to generously draw a sample of 450 respondence. The instrument for the study was the Sustainability of University Lecturers’ Performance and Actualization of Knowledge-Based Economy Questionnaire (SUTPAKEQ) developed in line with a Likert 4-point rating scale of Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD). The instrument was duly faced validated by two experts in the departments of Educational Test and Measurement, and Educational Management of the University of Calabar. To determine the internal consistency of the instrument, a pilot test was carried out and the reliability coefficient based on Cronbach Alpha statistic obtained for the subscales range from .76 to .82. The data obtained from the field were analysed using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at the .05 level of significance. The results showed that the actualization of a knowledge-based economy in Cross River State is influenced by University Lecturers’ Performance Pay (Incentives) and University Lecturers’ Performance evaluation. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that: University Lecturers’ Performance incentives should be adequately and regularly paid to enhance their efficiency for the actualization of a knowledge-based economy in Cross River State.
