Description

This thesis examines the concept of dualisation of rhythmic patterns, the representation of a rhythm using only two voices. From different literatures and discussions with professional musicians, it is suspected that from the perspective of a musician, this concept holds a certain degree of meaningfulness, replicable to produce similar dualisations, and the concept is universally applicable to different drummers. The aim of this dissertation is to verify these claims from musicians empirically. In order to obtain data for analysis, dualisation of rhythmic patterns are collected from experienced percussionists. A total of 19 hours of data were collected, and by analysing them a correlation between dualisations and the perception of the concept can be drawn. Several properties of dualisation can be confirmed, such as the meaningfulness and the replicability of dualisation from the same drummer; however, some original claims remain disputable, noticeably the universality of dualisation.
