Foucault and the Patristic Tradition

The paper addresses the problem of the history of early Christian thought in Michel Foucault’s oeuvre. It aims at disclosing central place of Foucault’s writings on the patristic tradition in his project of the genealogy of modernity. In his reading of Christianity, both of relations which an individual establishes with himself and with truth, fundamentally transforms. Ultimately, Christianity, and particularly Christian monasticism,turns to be a condition of possibility for a type of power known as the disciplinary power.

Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu historii wczesnego chrześcijaństwa w dziele Michela Foucault. Jego celem jest ukazanie centralnego miejsca, jakie zajmują pisma Foucaulta dotyczące tradycji patrystycznej w jego projekcie genealogii współczesności. W jego ujęciu chrześcijaństwo w zasadniczy sposób zmieniło i typ relacji, jaką jednostka ustanawia ze sobą, i relację wobec prawdy. Ostatecznie, chrześcijaństwo, a dokładniej chrześcijański monastycyzm, ukazuje się jako warunek możliwości władzy znanej jako władza dyscyplinarna.
