A database of human burials in early medieval Italy

  • 1. Brown University

Description

This dataset compiles over 400 sites with late antique and early medieval burials of human remains in Italy. These data were compiled from numerous sources, including FASTI online, and have good distribution across the country. Only sites with skeletal remains are recorded, so stray finds of sarcophagi or tombstones are not included. This dataset is intended to provide a path towards building a better understanding of the individual, human experience of this period, including but not limited to the impact of the Justinianic Plague and First Pandemic of Yersinia Pestis, changing dietary practices between Roman and post-Roman life, and issues of identity and religion in a fractured early-medieval political landscape.
