Description

The production of transgenics aims at the genetic improvement of organisms, through the transfer of an isolated gene from a specific organism to another. Brazil occupies the third position in the world in the cultivation of transgenics, only behind the United States and Argentina. The most cultivated transgenic products in Brazil are soy, corn and cotton. The aim of the present study was to analyze the evolution of patent filings for transgenics in the database of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). Regarding the methodology, the search was carried out in the INPI database, where a technological mapping was performed, using some filters, 204 patent deposits from the years 1992 to 2017 were found. The results showed that there was a significant growth compared to the first deposit until the last one, since in 2012 there was the largest number of deposits, and regarding the profile of depositors, the majority were companies, however independent inventors presented a percentage of only 2% of the analyzed deposits. It is concluded that there are still few technologies aimed at transgenics deposited at the INPI, as well as the granted patents add up to a very small amount, making it necessary that there be more investments in this area, because, despite being a national database, Brazil has only 16 transgenic deposits.
