OLED display driver using the ATTINY2313 MICROCONTROLLER: An Internship Project Report
Description
The motivation for the project was based on the need of connect the ATtiny2313
microcontroller onto a SSD1306 OLED display, while would be interesting to work on this
microcontroller for this purpose, because it has a very good potential to become a powerful
device considering its size and multitask inputs and outputs. This project have been proposed by my supervisor at the University of Limerick, Dr. Ian Grout, during my stay in a summer internship programme.
The OLED display used on the project has a vast compatibility with Arduino boards, so that’s why it was easy to find
information, libraries and programs examples on the Internet for specific projects using
Arduino, and give me a wider understanding about how the board works with Arduino.
Thus, understanding how Arduino devices are connected and how they uses libraries allow
us a wide understanding about how could we write down some specific libraries suitable to
this current microcontroller (ATMEL AT Tiny 2313A).
The work done here was basically to connect these two devices considering their
respective ISP connections provided on their respective datasheets, by checking
inputs and outputs in order to find the correct sets of connection, creating programs and
libraries in C language to interact with these signals by using an ATtiny2313 microcontroller,
a SSD1306 OLED Display and an AVR ISP MK-II device to communicate and generate the
signals to the board. The program were been built according on the signal behaviour
described on the datasheets. Again, I also used Arduino datasheets to have a good overview
about how to connect everything and to write down specific functions based on examples,
but I could not go forward in many examples designed to Arduino because it uses a different
(and, I would say, more powerful) microcontroller, which is the ATMega 328 .
