Risk analysis and safety system evaluation of a new Alpine railway tunnel

The risk analysis of a new ca. 13 kilometers lomg twin track railway tunnel in Northern Italy is presented herein.  Two important criteria are thereby highlighted: the operability of the line defined in terms of expected shut down and the societal risk derived in terms of expected human losses.  The influence of the safety measures is discussed and recommendations for future risk analysis criteria are provided.
