Amorbia cocori Phillips & Powell 2007, new species

Description

19. Amorbia cocori Phillips & Powell, new species

Figs. 43, 44, 81, 104, 135

DIAGNOSIS. This species is most similar to A. colubrana, but A. cocori can be distinguished by the scaling on the vertex in two groups (Fig. 4), a longer costal fold, asymmetrical valvae, an emarginate sacculus, and the absence of spines on the aedeagus.

DESCRIPTION. MALE. FW length 11.0–13.0 mm (mean = 12.3; n = 5). HEAD: Frons concave, white scaled, vertex smooth, straw yellow. Antenna with pale brown scaling. Labial palpus 3.0X length of interantennal space, porrect, dark golden honey laterally, inner surface paler. THORAX: Dorsum smooth scaled, straw yellow; tegula concolorous. FW ground light brown, basal to median fascia golden honey, postmedian to subterminal area with pale yellow band extending from M1 to posterior margin of wing. Apex produced. Costal fold well developed, reaching middle of costa. HW straw yellow scaling. ABDOMEN: Light brown. Genitalia as in Fig. 81 (slide # 3363532, INBio, Costa Rica, Puntarenas, Sirena; n = 2). Socii with struts. Transtilla rectangular, finely spined on posterior margin. Valva subrectangular; sacculus sclerotized, 0.6X length of valva, asymmetrical, left side deeply emarginate at 0.66 its length. Juxta highly modified with dorsal prominence. Aedeagus 0.5X length of valva, slender, bent 90° at ca. 0.6 length from base.

FEMALE. FW length 16.0–17.0 mm (mean = 16.5; n = 2). HEAD and THORAX: As described for the male, except subbasal and median fasciae darker. ABDOMEN: Genitalia as in Fig. 104 (slide # 2739341, INBio, Costa Rica, Heredia, Estación Biológica La Selva; n = 1). Sterigma developed into anteriorly-pointed lateral pockets, median sinus subtriangular. Ductus bursae uniform in width, 2.0X length of papillae anales.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIOLOGY. This species is known from Costa Rica on the Pacific and Caribbean slopes below 650 m elevation (Fig. 135). Collection data show flight activity in five months of the year: December to March and July to August, including both the rainy and dry seasons. The immature stages are unknown.

ETYMOLOGY. The species name corresponds to the locality where one of the paratypes was collected, Estación Cocori, Limón, Costa Rica, and is treated as a noun in apposition. Cocorí is also the name of a famous children’s book by the Costa Rican writer Joaquín Gutiérrez, dedicated here to his memory.
