Description

The eighties of the fourteenth century were convulsive years for the Arezzo area and therefore also for the Valdichiana, at the end of which the entire area passed permanently under Florentine control. But before the process was completed, the community of Foiano autonomously decided to establish precise agreements with the new dominant city which, by guiding the transition to the new regime, would safeguard its prerogatives and peculiar characteristics. The statute of 1387 published here is the mirror of this historical moment: composed of the four canonical books, it represents the result of a normative tradition coming from afar, revised and adapted to the changed conditions. The edition is accompanied by two introductory essays that frame the institutional and economic-social structures of the period.
