Yield performance of hybrid rice varieties during boro season under different levels of USG application

Description

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural
University, Mymensingh during the period from January to June 2011 to evaluate the effect of urea super
granule (USG) as a source of nitrogen on the yield performance of hybrid rice varieties during boro season. The
experiment consisted of four hybrid rice varieties viz., Hira-2, SL-8H, ACI Hybrid-Shampad and ACI Hybrid-
Shera and four levels of nitrogen viz., 49.68 kg N as USG, 74.52 kg N as USG, 99.36 kg N as USG and 123.28
kg N as prilled urea (PU). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three
replications. The highest grain yield (5.96 t ha 1), straw yield(2.93 t ha-1) and biological yield (8.89 t ha-1) was
found in ACI Hybrid-Shampad and this was might be the contribution of highest number of total tillers hill.
effective tillers hill-1, lowest number of non-effective tillers hill-1, highest plant height (93.09 cm), highest number
of grains panicle-1 and highest 1000-grain weight. On the other hand the lowest grain yield (5.76 t ha-1) was
produced by ACI Hybrid-Shera. Application of USG also exerted significant influence on the yield and yield
contributing characters of boro rice. Grain and straw yields were highest (6.48 and 3.70 t ha-1, respectively) from
the application of 99.36 kg N ha as USG. Regarding the interaction of variety and USG ACI Hybrid-Shampad
with placement of USG 99.36 kg N ha-1 appeared as the best variety.
